Adventure Overview

There is little wonder as to why the Coppermine River was nominated as a Canadian Heritage River in 2002. The cultural history goes back thousands of years to the ancient Dorset and Thule civilizations that inhabited this land, followed by the Dene and Inuit who used the copper from the shorelines to make copper tools. Early European explores such as Samuel Hearne and John Franklin were also captivated by this landscape during their explorations of the Arctic and Coppermine River.

Small spruce dot the upper shores of the river alongside colourful shrubs which eventually give way to purely tundra flora. Muskox and caribou graze the shoreline, keeping an eye out for arctic wolves while bald eagles, golden eagles, and gyrfalcons nest in the 50-60 high cliffs that tower over sections of the river.

This journey of a lifetime starts with a rendez-vous in Yellowknife for a pre-trip briefing and equipment check. The following day we will fly to Plummer’s Lodge on Great Bear Lake where we take our chartered float planes to the confluence of the Hepburn River and Coppermine River. From here we warm up with calm water and swifts, then build up to bigger Class 2 and 3 rapids further downriver. Taking care to scout more challenging rapids and depending on group skill level either run or portage the rapids. Our last night at Bloody Falls gives us a view of the ocean we are paddling towards. Finally on day 15 we paddle to the Inuit village of Kugluktuk to catch a flight back to Plummer’s Lodge, and finally back to Yellowknife. Our journey takes us down approximately 400km of the 845km’s of majesty that is the Coppermine River.

This trip is perfect for experienced paddlers looking for a challenge in a completely new environment.

These trips are being run in partnership with BlackFeather

We acknowledge that the Coppermine River is in the traditional territories of the Inuit Nunangat who continue to be stewards of these lands. We recognize that we are visitors to this land and will travel respectfully.
