Adventure Overview
At just 76 km long, the Mattawa River may be short, but it holds immense historical and ecological significance. Flowing east from Lake Nipissing to the Ottawa River, it winds through Samuel de Champlain and Mattawa River Provincial Parks, showcasing the classic beauty of a Canadian Shield river — towering red and white pines, rocky outcrops, and wildlife such as moose, black bear, and over 200 species of birds. In 1988, the Mattawa was officially designated a Canadian Heritage River, recognizing both its natural beauty and its vital role in Canada’s history.
The Mattawa River has an incredibly long cultural history. Archeological evidence from several sites along the river suggest that First Nations People have been using this river for over 6000 years as a connection between the St. Lawrence Valley and the upper Great Lakes. In the early 1600s, Étienne Brûlé, guided by Huron-Wendat, was among the first Europeans to travel this route, later mapping the area. For centuries afterward, it became a critical waterway for fur traders and voyageurs heading west. Paddlers today still follow many of the same portages, such as Portage de la Mauvaise Musique and Portage des Paresseux.
Our Family Canoe Trip begins at the eastern end of Trout Lake, just outside North Bay. From there, we paddle eastward, linking a series of beautiful lakes and portages before reaching the narrower, faster-flowing section of the Mattawa. Here, our experienced guides provide whitewater instruction, helping you read the river and safely navigate the gentle rapids. Evenings are spent around the campfire enjoying gourmet backcountry meals, beautiful sunsets, and time together in nature.
We acknowledge that the Mattawa River is located on the traditional territories of the Omàmìwininìwag (Algonquin) and Anishinabewaki and is recognized under both the Robinson-Huron (Treaty 61, 1850) and Williams (1923) Treaties. We recognize that we are visitors to this land, and will treat it with respect and dignity.
